IndeeLift Partners with the Spanish Leukodystrophy Association (ELA)

13/09/2023

In keeping with the mission to support the people who most need these devices and their caregivers, it is a great pleasure to announce the signing of a new collaboration agreement with the Spanish Association Against Leukodystrophy (ELA España).

Leukodystrophies are a group of disorders characterized by the progressive degeneration of the brain’s white matter due to imperfect growth or development of the myelin sheath, the fatty layer that acts as an insulator around nerve fibers. Myelin, which gives the brain’s white matter its color, is a complex substance made up of at least ten different chemicals.

These disorders are in turn divided into two major groups:

  • Hypomyelinating leukodystrophies, in which the formation of myelin is abnormal from birth, and

  • Demyelinating leukodystrophies, in which myelin forms correctly until it begins to degenerate, usually due to the accumulation of substances that damage the myelin.

The Spanish Association Against Leukodystrophy is a non-profit organization dedicated to the comprehensive care of leukodystrophies.

ELA Spain, an association of great importance

ELA España was founded in 2001, following meetings held by families in the library of the Niño Jesús University Hospital in Madrid, where they sought support from others who, like them, were going through a very difficult situation. They were facing the lack of information and the loneliness that come with having a family member with a rare disease. For this reason, this group of parents, mostly mothers and fathers, decided to organize and create the Spanish Association Against Leukodystrophy (ALE), which was officially registered as a National Non-Profit Association with the Ministry of the Interior on April 16, 2001, under number 167705. The Association therefore has the following objectives:

  • Provide information and support to families affected by leukodystrophies
  • Raise awareness among medical professionals and the general population
  • Contribute to the creation of a European database
  • Contribute to the European fund for medical research on leukodystrophies
  • Promote training activities and the exchange of projects, experiences, and research
  • Organize courses, conferences, seminars, congresses, and other informational and educational events
  • Carry out any other activity that benefits the best possible treatment of people affected by leukodystrophy
